Women’s Suffrage Plaques Unveiling Event

In partnership with People for Portland Road, we celebrated our local history with the remarkable contributions of two outstanding women. Supporting the ongoing heritage trail initiative, we will unveil two plaques as a tribute to the pivotal roles played by Ethel Fennings, a Suffragist, and Mary Pearson, a Suffragette, in advocating for women’s right to vote. This history is intertwined with the legacy of our community as their fight for women’s suffrage was in the vicinity of South Norwood Clocktower. See video of the event below.

Address: 251-253 Selhurst Rd SE25 6XS (corner of Oliver Grove) The unveiling will commence at 3PM.

Local historian, John Hickman briefly introduced proceedings at the unveiling venue. The Deputy Civic Mayor, Cllr Appu Srinivasan, invited local MP Sarah Jones and Carole Roberts, President of Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society, to speak and unveil the second plaque.

Reception was held at the Brutalist Library at 3:30 p.m where refreshments were provided by Little Mouse, Cheesemonger
